Limerick FC had to be content with staying in the Premier Division after beginning last season with aspirations of European football for 2018.

The Super Blues began with Martin Russell as manager of the club but he was gone by April and they eventually brought Neil McDonald after a prolonged period with Academy boss Willie Boland as caretaker.

Defensive errors blighted some promising displays and a lack of consistency is something that they will be looking to rectify.

A decent cup run in which they reached they semi-final was the highlight of Limerick’s season along with a home win against eventual champions Cork City that went a long way to securing their Premier Division spot for the coming season.

Star Player: Chiedozie Ogbene
Ogbene had a sensational season on the wing for Limerick. His pace and power terrorised defences up and down the country.

What They Need For 2018

To make Markets Field a fortress: Teams enjoy coming to play at the Markets Field due to the excellent playing surface. Limerick need to stop this by becoming very difficult to beat at home.

Recruit more players: Limerick have struggled to bring in players so far in the off-season with only three signing for the club at the time of writing. To have any chance of staying up they will need to recruit massively in the coming weeks.

Realistic Targets For 2018

Staying Up: It’s going to be a long season unless their recruitment issues are sorted out. If not, it will be a very long season for Super Blues fans.

Promotion of Academy Players: Neil McDonald’s hand maybe forced in this issue with the lack of signings thus far. It could open the door for some of the club’s younger players to shine.

Best Signing Made So Far: Daniel Kearns
If Kearns can rediscover some form from the past, then the ex-Sligo Rovers winger could become a very shrewd signing.
