What a season to remember for the SSE Airtricity League First Division Champions Waterford FC.

As Waterford lifted the First Division title after the 1-0 win over Longford Town in front of a packed Regional Sports Centre, it must have been an emotional moment for the supporters to see Waterford back in the big-time. Not only did they play the best football in the division but they've also brought the city back together and behind it's football club.

Make no mistake about it, a strong Waterford are a force to be reckoned with and they've already made movements in the transfer window to suggest further progression next season. The club moved quickly to retain the likes of influential midfielder Paul Keegan, defender Patrick McClean, winger Dean O'Halloran and fan favourite Derek Daly amongst others.

But ambition is key and more recent signings have shown that owner Lee Power wants to mount a top-half challenge. Striker Ismahil Akinade signed for Bohemians whilst former Limerick midfielder Bastien Hery, who was linked with a move abroad, has also signed for Waterford.

Also, Gavan Holohan has completed a move from Galway United and former UCD stopper Niall Corbet has penned a deal. Arguably, Waterford are having the most impressive transfer window of any club so far and if they can use the lift from the title win last season and get the new signings to gel quickly, many SSE Airtricity League supporters might see them as an outside shout for the European places.

Star Player: Patrick McClean

The former Derry City man was a valuable asset for Waterford last season and will no doubt prove to be one of the key players once again in the Premier Division next campaign.

What they need for 2018

Another Striker: Akinade has joined the club but with David McDaid heading north to Larne, another top quality striker would help Waterford push further up the table.

Cup run: Think about it, Waterford in a FAI Cup final at the Aviva Stadium. It would be incredible for the City so hopefully, Waterford can push forward in the cup competitions.

Realistic targets for 2018

Mid-table security: There is a lot of talk about a potential European push but that step up from the First Division to the Premier Division should not be taken lightly. Mid-table and a platform to build on will be a great achievement.
