Shelbourne manager Ian Morris praised the performances of his players, and the club’s fans, after they produced an excellent display to defeat Limerick 2-0 at Tolka Park on Friday evening.
First-half strikes from Karl Moore and Lorcan Fitzgerald gave the home side victory but the scoreline would have been a lot more comfortable but for a world-class performance from Limerick goalkeeper Jack Brady.
“To be fair to Jack, I don’t think he’ll have many better nights than that in goal,” Morris said after the game.
“How Ryan Brennan didn't come out with two or three tonight, and with various others, is beyond me but full credit to their keeper.
“We performed how we wanted to, where we were capable of. We set a standard over the last few games and we are starting to click, and things are starting to come together so it’s really important that we put a run together and start driving up that table.”
One for the most impressive aspects of the performances by Shels was the energy they showed to play at a high tempo throughout the 90 minutes, and Morris pointed out that is something they have talked about.
“That’s something that we bang on about; that we play at a high tempo, move the ball quickly and play with freedom within a bit of a structure.
"The lads performed well today; the rotation of the front row was excellent; I thought the two boys in the middle and the two centre-halfs were fantastic. They gave us a base to go and play, and both full-backs used the ball and got forward."
The home crowd responded enthusiastically to the performance they were witnessing, singing at full volume throughout the game to help spur on the players.
“We want to move the ball quickly, we want to entertain and you can see by the crowds coming down; the numbers are driving at Tolka and hopefully we can go out and put on performances like that for them every week, and they come in their droves because the difference in noise tonight was exceptional.
"You could see at the end the players showing real appreciation for the fans because that noise is unbelievable. It pushes the team on and makes us want to get more so it is an important relationship,” said Morris
