Despite being without their main attacking threats, Sligo Rovers boss Liam Buckley says he was impressed with how many chances his team created in Saturday’s scoreless draw with Shamrock Rovers.
Top scorer Romeo Parkes picked up a knee injury in the cup game against Dundalk, ruling him out for the rest of the year. While fellow striker Ronan Coughlan missed out due to an accumulation of yellow cards.
Forced to play midfielder Daryl Fordyce as a lone striker, Sligo created the better of the opportunities in what was an absorbing encounter.
Kris Twardek, David Cawley and Niall Morahan were amongst the chances for the Bit O’Red, who troubled Shamrock Rovers throughout.
Buckley was also satisfied with how the team picked themselves up after their recent cup disappointment.
“There were plenty of chances”, he reflected.
“I was delighted with our performance because we were without a few forwards, but I was delighted with the effort we put in. I thought the draw was a fair result.
“Daryl has played up front a few times and he did really well. He worked extremely hard.
“We had to pick ourselves up and put a shift in and that’s right through to the end of the season with a view of looking forward to next year.”
The Dubliners had chances too. The best of these falling to Ronan Finn after John Mahon’s mistake allowed the Hoops skipper through one-on-one. Ed McGinty did well however to quickly close the angle and block down Finn’s attempt.
“John was unlucky that he’s slipped," Buckley said.
“But it was a fantastic save and Ed’s pulled off a few fantastic saves right through the season for us.”
