Tommy Barrett hailed his young guns after their unbeaten run in the SSE Airtricity First Division stretched to five games following a 2-1 victory over Galway United at the Markets Field.
Limerick were 1-0 down at the break after Shane Doherty netted for Galway, but goals from Lee Devitt and Kieran Hanlon in the second half lifted Barrett’s men to fourth place in the table.
It was Devitt’s first senior goal for the club and the Limerick boss paid tribute to the midfielder after another impressive performance.
“He is a great lad. You know what you get with Lee. You can play him left wing, you can play him in the centre of midfield or you can play him at left back.
“He is primarily a central midfielder and that’s where he will end up. But we have to mind him. He is a really good prospect and we will look after him as best we can.
“I don’t think either team was good in the first half. It was a mistake for their goal, but we had to up it in the second half and we did.”
Having went in front, Limerick could have put the game to bed in the final quarter. Connor Ellis was denied by two fine Kevin Horgan saves, and the Galway netminder also made a decent stop to deny Blues sub Karl O’Sullivan.
However, Barrett wasn’t overly concerned about the missed opportunities as his back four and keeper had little to do in the closing stages.
“You are always a bit worried when you miss chances and I would have been really disappointed if we had lost the game.
“But, the lads never looked like conceding in the second half. They have been excellent this year. I can’t commend them enough. Everyone of the them have been top class."
Limerick face a trip to bottom of the table Wexford in their next game as they bid to cement a top four spot before the visit of Shelbourne in two week’s time.
However, Barrett is fully focused on the task at hand and isn’t taking a trip to the sunny south east lightly.
“Every game is difficult. We see it every week. We haven’t beaten anyone by two goals outside of Cobh. We have got to take our chances and go down there.
“They have got some really dangerous players in Danny Furlong and Jack Doherty. They have been losing by a goal to a lot of teams.
“It happened us with Athlone last week. We went up there and we weren’t at it and we weren’t at it tonight in the first half. You can get turned over by anyone in this league, but if we go out with the right attitude, we should be ok.”
