"It was a great game to watch" - Cobh Ramblers boss Stephen Henderson

Cobh Ramblers manager Stephen Henderson was unsure whether it was a case of glass half full or glass half empty after watching his side play out an intriguing 2-2 draw with Wexford FC in an exciting SSE Airtricity League First Division clash at Ferrycarrig Park on Friday evening.

It was a frenetic end-to-end encounter, but having got their noses in front twice Henderson felt they should probably have been heading home with the points, although he was quick to praise the hosts for the part they played in a riveting contest.

“We came down and tried to win and probably should have won it as we were ahead twice but all credit to them for hanging in there and sticking to their philosophy and having a go and a draw was probably a fair result in the end,” he said.

A deflected effort from Denzil Fernades and a sweet Stephen Kenny strike gave the Rams a 2-1 advantage at the break, but Danny Furlong blasted home an equaliser midway through the second-half to ensure the spoils were shared and Henderson was generous in his praise for the attacking prowess of the Slaneysiders.

“We went for the win but in fairness Wexford have some very good players. They're a good side and they're well organised and they have a lovely creative spark in the front line and pass the ball really well. Danny Furlong has been one of the best players in this division for years and young Doherty is a very clever little player,” he said.

Earlier in the campaign Cobh put Wexford to the sword, emphatically winning 6-1 in St Colman's Park, but Henderson said that was a one-off and was ready for a backlash on Friday evening, which certainly made for a good spectacle for the supporters, if not for the manager himself.

“We didn't expect anything like that again. A point down here is nothing to be sniffed at. It was a great game to watch, although it wasn't great for me, because I thought we were a bit too open at times.

"We have a good young side and they all worked really hard tonight. It's a pity we couldn't hold on for the win but we've a Munster derby against Limerick to look forward to next weekend and we'll go again,” he said.
