Cork City manager John Caulfield has admitted his side have progressed to another level since last year as they continued their excellent start to the new SSE Airtricity league season with a win over Galway United on Friday night. Goals from Sean Maguire, Ryan Delaney, Stephen Dooley and Connor Ellis ensured the FAI Cup holders made it two wins from two so far this campaign. And speaking to reporters afterwards, the City boss praised his side’s attitude and insisted he believes this current crop is the best squad he’s managed during his reign in charge. “The bulk of the players we have this year are totally committed to the club, fantastic attitude, great spirit and they know what we want to do so hopefully in eight months time we are in the mix to win a trophy,” said Caulfield. “My first year we had four amateur players, they came in from the senior league and they would run through the wall for you, they were fantastic but we wanted to progress to a higher level. “The second year we bought in better players and they were better technically but they didn’t have the heart and the fight some of them so at the bigger picture we weren’t at the races in the league even though we went to the cup final. “Last year we went to another level which was very, very good but this year I feel we are even better again and where that takes us at the end of the year we will see. “But I think we are better with the quality of the guys we brought in, they are hungrier and I feel that they will bring us to another level and that’s what we need because we would have no chance otherwise. “We keep saying the league is a slog over eight months and you need fellas pushing you along, tonight its three points, a clean sheet, six points from six at the start of the season and a sluggish first half, it was a good victory in the end.” Andrew Horgan
