Pat Delvin praised the performance of his side after Cabinteely came from behind to beat Shelbourne 3-2 at Tolka Park on Friday night.

The home side took the lead early on but Cabinteely drew level from the spot just before the break, before two quick-fire goals in the second half saw them walk away with all three points. After the game, Devlin praised the effort his players for their efforts in Drumcondra.

“Shels took the lead through a very bad mistake from us, but I thought we had most of the play in the first half so was happy enough going in (at half-time),” said Devlin.

“They came out (in the second half), which I thought they would, and put it up to us. We withstood what they threw at us and then we got two very good goals. Then, of course, it became a little bit of bicycle clips time. I thought the lads did great. They got a little bit tired but I’m very, very pleased with them.

Despite Shels dominating large parts of the game, Devlin was delighted with the result, considering the heavy defeat they suffered at the hands of Bray Wanderers a week prior.

“It’s all about the result at the end of the day. Stephen McGuinness brought off a great save and somebody says ‘yeah but that’s what he’s there for’”, Devlin quipped. “Look, you take what you can. Last week we didn’t have any luck, tonight we had a little bit of luck but I think we earned it.”

Devlin also took time out to praise the performance of Rob Manley, who scored the team’s second goal.

“He did a great job for us. He’s playing college football and there is a little bit of pressure on him to play certain games. He has a game next week and a game on Monday. It is a little bit tough on him healthwise so we are trying to manage him a little bit better. He’ll be a great asset for us for the rest of the season.”
