Waterford FC first team coach John Frost believe a draw was the fairest result after an enthralling 2-2 draw against Shelbourne in Tolka Park on Friday night.

Shelbourne took the lead in the opening 10 minutes when Derek Prendergast fired home but right on the stroke of half time, Waterford were level as Kenny Browne headed home Derek Daly’s cross.

Waterford turned the game on its head before the hour mark when David McDaid put the visitors in front, but Derek Prendergast was on hand with 11 minutes remaining to grab a deserved equaliser.

“Probably in the end a draw was the fairest result,” John Frost said after the game. “We didn’t do the ugly stuff in the first half where we needed to win more tackles and get in behind them. We didn’t do that but we dug ourselves out of it and showed some great character.

“We did well to get the game back to 1-1 before getting off to a good start in the second half when we got in front at 2-1. I think that our game management in the second half tonight could have been a lot better around the pitch. We conceded in the end tonight and it’s cost us.

“The equalising goal that we conceded is disappointing but Shelbourne were threatening that all game. In the first half, we had three corners and they broke from two of them. It was the same in the second half and it’s proved costly from our point of view.”

Despite dropping points, the Blues are back in action this Tuesday in the EA Sports Cup against Wexford, before facing the same opponents in the league next Saturday. Frost knows the side will be raring to go.

“It hurts right now though [dropping points]. It really does hurt to concede late in the game but I suppose when we reflect, it’s a point and we’re still up and running. We now have to look forward to the home game against Wexford FC in the league next week but also the league cup game on Tuesday night.

“I’m not sure what type of team we’re going to have for the trip to Wexford. We’re going to have to wait and see what kind of bodies that we’re going to have because a couple of players picked up knocks so we’ll have to see how they are.

“I think that come Tuesday, we’ll be raring to win that game because you can’t beat a winning mentality but what type of team we’ll have out? We’ll just have to wait and see.”
