After watching Cork City claim the SSE Airtricity League Premier Division title last year - thanks largely to the goals from Sean Maguire - Dundalk boss Stephen Kenny knew that he had to recruit well for 2018.

A scan of The Lilywhites' roster confirms that the experienced manager has done just that with his forwards division packed with Patrick Hoban, Ronan Murray, Sam Byrne and Marco Tagbajumi.

Competition for places within a squad is a healthy thing. It keeps the competitive fires burning and sends out a message that nobody is guaranteed a starting place - they must earn it.

That is why Hoban is excited about what this season can bring. After scoring twice in the 8-0 victory over Limerick, the Galway man is upbeat about his team's ambitions.

“The gaffer (Stephen Kenny) is going to have a headache down the line, because we have a lot of talent in the squad," said Hoban.

“It will be tough for him picking the first XI, but whoever is starting in that XI will have to be on top of their game.

“It’s good to have lads behind you making sure that you are.”
