Finn Harps recorded their first league win of the season, after a brilliant performance saw them also register a first clean sheet at Finn Park this season.

Caolon McAleer opened the scoring in the first half with Nathan Boyle doubling the lead after the restart, McAleer rounded things off with a nice counter-attack to make the view of the bottom of the table a lot less grim.

Despite some good performances at home, things never fell the right way, something Horgan says played a big part in the game.

“We’ve had some decent performances along the way, you need a little rub of the green and tonight with Caolon (McAleer), his shot hit the post and went over the line as opposed to maybe coming out,” he said.

“We have beaten a good side tonight, UCD will be very difficult to take points off, especially at home, and indeed here. We got turned over here last year by UCD but today we have beaten a proper side which is pleasing,” he added.

Harps have now earned five points from their last three games, three more than in their previous 13 matches before that and Ollie noted the performances against Sligo and Cork boosted the side.

“Two very good results, I don’t think this club has gotten anything out of Cork in about ten years, to get a result down there, you saw what they can do tonight (against Bohemians at Dalymount), we drew with a very good side and we drew with a very good side in Sligo,” he said.

The result puts Harps on seven points, three points adrift of UCD, who have a game in hand, and even though it is a better view to behold now for Harps fans, Horgan stated that his side are still bottom.

“We are still bottom, don’t get me wrong, it’s probably just disappointing we had to wait so long to pick up three points and if we have to wait this long again to pick up our next three, we’re gone,” he noted.

“To be fair to the lads out there, despite losing ten games in a row, they kept plugging away, I mean we lost 4-0 away in Waterford, with ten men for most of the game, but they kept going until the bitter end, otherwise that could have been six or seven.”

Finn Harps have a short break before their next game on the 17th of May and Horgan isn’t so sure that it’s a good thing.

“We are going well, the break might not be a good thing, we could have done with a break somewhere in between the ten losses in a row,” he said.

“Waterford won 3-0 in Inchicore tonight, they are physically very strong, they are a serious side, they were in Europe for a reason.

“We will prepare for Waterford early, they play Sligo next Saturday night, we will have a look at that to see where they are at,” he concluded.
