Central defender Roberto Lopes was understandably elated to have played a starring role in Shamrock Rovers hard-earned 1-0 win over Bohemians at the Tallaght Stadium – their first victory over their north Dublin rivals for over two years. “It’s a great feeling – one of the most memorable games of the season. It’s a long time coming. We’re just ‘buzzing’ to get the result and ‘buzzing’ to get the three points. What a night for it.”  Rovers outclassed Bohs in the first half and deservedly led through a Graham Burke header. But Bohs gained the upper hand in the second half possession stakes. “We knew they’d come out and have a go,” reflected Lopes. “First half we played really well. Second half, we expected there’d be an onslaught and with the conditions as well – there was a strong breeze blowing. We knew we’d be under a bit of pressure. But we expected it. We dug in, stuck together and defended well, I thought.”  While Burke and the Hoops attacking players were to the fire in the first half, it was Lopes and his colleagues in defence who had most to do after the break “We’d liked to have played a bit more like we did in the first half but the conditions dictate that. We’ve learned from the past games to do what it takes to get a result and we showed that tonight.”  Rovers drew huge inspiration from the promptings of the Hoops faithful in the record league attendance. ”It’s brilliant. The fans have been brilliant all season. They stuck with us even when we were unfortunate against Bohs and tonight that was for them. It was great to see everyone there and you could hear them encouraging every minute of the night. That’s for them.”  Lopes hasn’t lost hope of chasing down the champions. “We’re just looking to do the business our end – keep them honest. Keep getting the three points and keep winning the games - that’s all we can do – and hope they slip up. Dundalk are fantastic team and we’ll do our best to close the gap.”
