“It’s up there!” said Karl Sheppard when asked to assess his stunning strike that gave Cork City a vital lead in their eventual 2-0 victory over Bohemians at Dalymount Park.  It was City’s ninth successive win in the league – a club record. Dave Barry’s City won eight in a row at the start of the 1998/99 season but failed to win the league.  Early in the season as it is, the 2017 crop don’t look like slipping. But the league leaders were made fight all the way by a resolute Bohemians eleven. “It was a tough game,” said Sheppard.  “Coming up to Dalymount is never easy.  It wasn’t our best performance but we were just happy that we won.”  City only made the points safe when Garry Buckley scored in the 87th minute. Lead striker Seanie Maguire had a quiet outing tonight but Sheppard was keen to emphasise that City are not totally dependent on the Kilkenny man.   “’Bucks’ (Garry Buckley) got his goal as well.”   Sheppard is delighted Cork City’s victory gives them a nine-point advantage but is not getting carried away.  “Things are going very well at the minute. We’re just concentrating on ourselves. We have our eyes on the prize but the time to look at other results is when you have done well yourselves.” “I caught it very well. I knew the second I hit, I knew it was in,” said the ex-Shamrock Rovers player of his fifth league goal of the campaign. “Not my worst goal!” Sheppard’s precision half volley was acclaimed by the Rebel Army hordes in the Des Kelly Stand behind Shane Supple’s net. Some of those fans will be at the Market’s Field on Monday for the EA Sports Cup match against Munster rivals Limerick. Many more will be back in Dublin at Richmond Park next weekend as Sheppard and his comrades seek ten in a row!
