Shane Keegan was effusive in his praise for Alan Murphy after the Galway United midfielder became the club’s all-time leading goal scorer in his side’s 3-0 win over Cobh Ramblers.

Murphy got his 75th goal for the men in maroon against the Cork side and Keegan said that the Mayo man has been “super” since returning the United fold.

Keegan was quick to point out that Murphy’s return has added some variety to the Galway midfield, but this has led to him having a selection headache trying to choose between Murphy and fellow holding midfielder Alex Byrne.

“I took Murph out last week and put Alex Byrne in (against Shelbourne), I was disappointed, but I probably thought Alex Byrne was our best player and now he’s left out this week.

“You’re trying to choose the right man for each job, but when you got two really good sitting players as we have, the chances are one of them is going to be left out.

“That must be annoying for the two of them I imagine, considering they are both playing at such a high standard, but it’s great to have those options”.

Overall, Keegan felt his side performance were much improved from last week’s 2-0 defeat to Shelbourne.

“Last Friday night was a disaster and I would be happy enough to take the blame, because I put out a front two that were well under the fitness levels required and that’s a major mistake on my behalf.

“It was poor last week but an awful lot better tonight”.

Finally, Keegan also commended the performances of some the younger players in his squad against Cobh, especially Conor Layng.

“Conor’s attitude is superb. He is an absolute sponge in training, every word you say to him is taken on board”.
