Wexford FC's Under 17 midfielder Kyle Kennedy has always been drawn to the beautiful game like a magnet to steel.

The young Cleariestown native cut his teeth with the all-conquering Wexford town outfit North End United, with whom he and his talented team-mates won all before them as they progressed through the age groups, and it was no surprise when he made the step up to SSE Airtricity National Under 17 League.

Kennedy, who joined the club last year from the Sky Blues, says it's been a pleasurable journey so far, but admits there is a noticeable step up in standard from the local leagues.

“I've been enjoying it alright. It's a good step up and the games are more tactical and you have to be on your game every day or you'll be punished for your mistakes,” said Kennedy.

The level-headed teenager wants to continue to build on his promise and is hoping he can continue to progress on the playing fields at Ferrycarrig Park.

“I'd like to keep on going up through the ranks at Wexford FC, up to the Under 19s and then hopefully progress on to the first team in years to come,” he said.

After a promising start to the campaign the versatile Kennedy, who can line out at the right or left side of midfield or up front, suffered a freak injury away from the playing fields which has kept him out of the side, and after the enforced lay-off he is itching to return to the fold.

“I've been out injured for the last seven or eight weeks and I should be back in the next two or three weeks and I can't wait to get back to it,” he said.

When the youngster, who plays hurling and football for his local club St Anne's, looks to the future his passion for sport shines through like a beacon.

“I'd like to do something involved with sport, like a gym instructor or something like that,” he said.

For now though, it is simply about getting back on the pitch and continuing his development with Wexford.
