League of Ireland clubs to participate in Down Syndrome Futsal Festival

Sunday 9th June – save the date! It’s when several League of Ireland clubs will participate in the inaugural League of Ireland Down Syndrome Futsal Festival taking place at Gormanston Sports Complex, Co. Meath.

This fantastic new initiative is a collaboration between the FAI Football For All programme and the League of Ireland via the Club’s Football and Social Responsibility (FSR) Officers and will provide players with Down Syndrome countrywide with an opportunity to line out for their local League of Ireland clubs.

Last year saw the establishment of an Irish Down Syndrome futsal team which competed at the SUDS European Championships in Padova, Italy. These trailblazing players who played admirably against more experienced national teams, have now paved the way for the development of a grassroots Down Syndrome Futsal programme.

Several League of Ireland clubs have so far enthusiastically embraced the opportunity to support players with Down Syndrome and form new teams and the following clubs will take part in the Down Syndrome Futsal Festival : Dundalk FC, Shelbourne FC, Cork City FC, Finn Harps FC, Wexford FC, Bohemian FC and Sligo Rovers FC.

The Down Syndrome Futsal squads will consist of players with Down syndrome, male or females aged 16 plus. Interested players can be signposted to their nearest club by getting in touch with [email protected]
