Longford Town manager Alan Mathews was in great form after his sides 3-1 victory over neighbours Athlone Town in tonight's SSE Airtricity League First Division encounter.

Mathews was pleased that his side managed to get the victory despite a substandard performance stating that their has been numerous occasions when they have been the better side and didn't get the desired result.

He also said how the loss of talisman David O'Sullivan through injury was made a lot easier by the brilliant performance of his replacement hat-trick hero Enda Curran.

Mathews commented: "It was Excellent to get the three points. We had a couple of good performances without getting the result.

"That wasn't one of our better performances tonight to be perfectly honest with you.

"We played with heart we played with passion we had to dig in. David went off very early in the game, we had to rejig and we brought Enda on and he gets a hat-trick which was quite a brilliant way to respond!"

Mathews was very ambitious when stating how he wants to bring Longford Town back to the Premier Division and back to playing in front of big crowds more often like they have in previous seasons.

Mathews said: "We have to do our very best to give ourselves an opportunity to try and play in Tallaght, to try and play in Dalymount, to try and play in Dundalk, to try and play in Turners Cross as we did last season.

"To do that we are going to have to work extremely hard as this is an extremely competitive league, there's a lot of clubs all trying to get out."

Longford Town face Shamrock Rovers on Tuesday in the EA Sports Cup before facing Cabinteely in their next league game on Saturday and Mathews is not looking past the cup game.

Mathews concluded: "We have a heavy schedule, we will come in again in the morning, we are playing Rovers Tuesday and we look forward to that and see where we go from there.

"We play Cabinteely after Rovers and we will address that once the Tuesday night game is done."
