Jason McClelland wore a satisfied smile after his hat-trick helped league leaders U.C.D. to a facile 8-0 victory in a one-sided SSE Airtricity League First Division encounter in Ferrycarrig Park on Monday.
Once Liam Scales headed the high-flying Students in front in the 13th minute there was only ever going to be one winner and McClelland says it’s something they have spoken about, not to let the opposition off the hook when they are on top.
“We have a game plan and a mindset that once we go ahead we just keep pushing on for more goals and I think we showed that taking by continuing to attack for the 90 minutes,” he said.
The 21-year-old notched his treble in little over 20 minutes and although obviously delighted to make such a telling contribution he was quick to praise the players around him for creating the opportunities.
“Of course it’s always nice to get on the scoresheet and to get three is great, but a lot of it is down to the to the other lads who created the chances with their passing and I just had to finish the moves off,” he said.
U.C.D. are in a brilliant position at present, sitting six points clear at the top of the table, but McClelland is well aware that there’s a long road ahead and plenty of work to do before they can be dreaming of titles, or even promotion.
“It’s a long campaign, but all we can do is keep pushing on and win as many games as we can and hopefully that will have us in a good place at the end of the season,” he said.
