As a postman, Chris Lyons always delivers.

The striker hadn’t found the net since the opening day of the season’s 4-0 success over Cobh Ramblers last February.

But he made up for the three-month barren spell with a spectacular hat-trick on Saturday to end SSE Airtricity League leaders Cabinteely FC’s record breaking seven-match undefeated streak.

“It’s great to get the win and be on the score-sheet again. I was disappointed last week against Limerick. I should have scored a few. Thankfully, it all went right for me. It’s a good three points for us,” said the 26-year-old as the Boynesiders handed Cabo their biggest home loss at Stradbrook since joining the League of Ireland back in 2015.

The Bray native’s treble follows Stephen Meaney and Sean Brennan claiming the match day in recent weeks for United.

“It’s great that we are getting goals all over the pitch (Drogheda are the Division’s leading scorers with 26 goals). We’ve goals coming from everywhere. We’re not just counting on one or two players. Goals are coming from centre halves; strikers, wingers and midfielders. It’s all good.”

Injury has blighted Lyons’ campaign so far this year. But the well-travelled front man – who has had seven different clubs since 2011 – believes his best is yet to come.

“It has been a stop-start season for me personally. With little injuries and concussion. It all clicked now. I’m absolutely delighted.”

The Louth outfit are still in fourth position. But are now just three points off pole position heading into next weekend’s encounter with Galway United.

“100% we’re confident. We came to Cabinteely with confidence. We’ve played well the last few weeks. We shouldn’t have lost to Longford. Last week, we did well to defeat Limerick. But we have a clean sheet now which is massive for Luca Gratzer.

"It’s great. Everyone’s happy, everyone’s buzzing. We’ll just keep going – game by game – play good football. And score goals” beamed Lyons.
