Ahead of the new SSE Airtricity League 2017 season, we caught up with St. Patrick’s Athletic striker Christy Fagan to see what he thinks ahead of the new campaign.

Q: Manager Liam Buckley has already said that he wants the side to improve on last season, how do you think that will be achieved?

CHRISTY: Looking back on last season, consistency was a big issue for us. We were never really able to get a run together despite picking up some decent results and it was really frustrating as we had the quality in the squad. We finished up 7th which is the worst place we’ve had since I’ve been at the club. We definitely need a big improvement this year so it all starts now in the pre-season with getting the new faces bedded in and hit the ground running.

Q: The manager did a lot of early work in the transfer window with getting the likes of Alex O’Hanlon in, could that be an advantage for you?

CHRISTY: It’s always good to have the new players in as soon as possible really. Let the group get to know them on and off the pitch, and start forming those partnerships. Also, if they’re there for a full pre-season, then they’re doing the same work as you. It’s more about ourselves as well. Liam has put a squad together and now it’s up to the players to produce next season. We need to take on tactically what he requires from us and put it into practice when the season starts.

Q: You signed a two-year deal yourself, you must have been delighted to get that over the line?

CHRISTY: I was, especially with the two-year deal to give yourself a bit of security as well, it’s nice. When you’re out of contract, it’s not the best time but it was nice to get it done and obviously, happy that it’s at Pats.

Q: What are your personal goals next year, more goals than last?

CHRISTY: Stay injury-free, hit the ground running and score as many as I can.
