Ahead of the new SSE Airtricity League 2017 season, we caught up with Galway United striker Ronan Murray to see what he thinks ahead of the new campaign. Q: Ronan, you’ve signed a deal with Galway United ahead of the 2017 season, you must be looking forward to getting started... RONAN: Absolutely, it is my first year back home since I left for Ipswich to join their Academy. It’s a big move for myself to come back to Ireland, playing close to home and really looking forward to it. Q: What motivated you to come back to Ireland and sign with Galway? RONAN: It was a huge draw for me to come back home and play where I can be around my friends and family. Obviously, the standard of the league has really improved over the last few years, looking at what Dundalk and Cork City did in Europe last year, so it felt like the right time to come back over. There is a lot of attention and publicity going on around the league so it felt like a good time for me. Q: You’ve obviously trained with the squad and with the new manager Shane Keegan, there must be a real buzz. RONAN: Absolutely, the lads who have been there for the last few years have really taken to the new manager and it is exciting times for Galway United. We’ve made a few good signings already and if we can keep everyone fit this season, I’m sure we’ll do well. Q: Has the new manager spoke to the players on what the aims for the 2017 season are? RONAN: No, we haven’t talked about our aims or aspirations yet but I’m sure it will be a difficult year with the three teams going well so we need to stay well away from that. There is enough quality in the squad to do that and push higher up the league. We’ve just got to start well and keep up that consistency throughout the campaign. The club has also saw the crowds go up over recent years and it would be good to see that continue to rise.
