Drogheda United and Shelbourne couldn’t be separated as the sides played out a scoreless draw at United Park.
Shels were forced into an early change as John Ross Wilson was replaced by Aiden Friel and it was the substitute who produced the first chance of note as his strike was beaten away by Paul Skinner.
Neither side were at their best in the opening half as Drogheda’s one chance of note came when Stephen Meaney flicked the ball onto Mark Doyle but Colin McCabe was quick off his line to deny the forward.
Drogheda were guilty of overcommitting players forward from a corner-kick as Shels sprung on the counter though James English’s poor touch ruined a four-on-one break. English was once again involved on 70 minutes as his powerful close-range header was acrobatically tipped onto the bar by Skinner.
Both sides pushed for a winner late on but in truth, a draw was a fair result on a night where quality was lacking in the final third.
