Limerick FC will be playing top flight football again next season after a 2-2 draw with Galway United at the Markets Field.
The home side only needed a point from the game but it looked like all three were in the bag after they led 2-0 at the break. Galway were the better side throughout and fought back to keep their survival hopes alive with the draw.
Shane Keegan's men missed several chances before Rodrigo Tosi put Limerick ahead from the penalty spot after Chiedozie Ogbene was shoved by Colm Horgan on 35 minutes. Limerick grabbed another eight minutes later when Ogbene finished off a fine move involving Tosi and Stephen Kenny.
Galway were back in the game immediately after the restart when Ronan Murray capitalised on a Bastien Hery error. Murray then had a glorious chance to level the game from 12 yards but Limerick sub keeper Freddy Hall made a spectacular save.
The keeper then turned from hero to villain as his foul on Murray 82 minutes in presented Eoin McCormack with a second penalty. He sent Hall the wrong way and Galway were level. Despite bossing the final stages, Galway were unable to find a winner and Limerick held on for a draw that secures their safety.
