WPD review - the opening day
The SSE Airtricity Women's Premier Division got underway yesterday with six brilliant games to get 2025 underway.
Shamrock Rovers 2-1 Shelbourne
At Tolka Park, Shamrock Rovers staged a dramatic comeback against Shelbourne. The home side took an early lead in the first minute through Kate Mooney. However, Shamrock Rovers equalized in the 75th minute when Katie O'Reilly capitalized on a goalkeeping error. Fiona Owens secured the victory for the visitors with a stoppage-time goal.
Athlone Town 2-0 Wexford
Defending champions Athlone Town began their title defense with a solid 2-0 win over Wexford at Lissywollen. The opening goal came from an own goal by Della Doherty, followed by a strike from Kelly Brady before halftime.
Galway United 5-1 DLR Waves
Galway United delivered a commanding performance at Eamonn Deacy Park, defeating DLR Waves 5-1. Despite an early goal from Amber Cosgrove for the visitors, Galway responded with two goals each from Emma Doherty and Aislinn Meaney, and a fifth from Amanda Smith.
Treaty United 2-0 Waterford
In the Munster derby at the Markets Field, Treaty United emerged victorious with a 2-0 win over Waterford. It was Waterford's first ever game in the Women's Premier Division and the Blues came close a number of times but will look forward to welcoming Shelbourne to the RSC next week.
Sligo Rovers 0-0 Bohemians
Sligo Rovers and Bohemians played out a goalless draw at The Showgrounds, with both teams unable to break the deadlock.
Peamount United 2-0 Cork City
Peamount United secured a 2-0 home victory against Cork City, starting their season on a positive note.
