An impressive end to the 2017 campaign and the appointment of former Cork City and Bohemians striker Neale Fenn as manager have raised hopes for next season.

Longford endured a difficult start to the campaign with defeats against Cobh Ramblers and Cabinteely in the opening weeks. Wins over Shelbourne and Athlone Town saw De Town climb the table but in truth, Longford were never able to mount a promotion challenge.

Alan Mathews left the club and was replaced by Fenn who began to pick up some impressive results. The best result of the campaign came in the FAI Cup after they beat Premier Division side Sligo Rovers 4-2 after extra time. Longford went on to claim 5th position in the First Division and Fenn will be looking to build on that next season.

Star Player: David O'Sullivan

The 30-year old striker had another impressive campaign for the club with nine league goals. He'll be a big loss for the club after he signed for First Division rivals Shelbourne.

What they need for 2018

A goalscorer: With O'Sullivan set for Tolka Park, Fenn's search is on to find a goalscorer to help them climb the table next season.

Strength in depth: A number of players really impressed for De Town but when injuries hit, the squad struggled. Fenn will be looking for a number of players to make sure his squad can cope with the demands of the season.

Realistic Targets for 2018

Play-off Challenge: With Galway United, Finn Harps and Drogheda United coming down from the Premier Division, promotion will be a tough ask but Longford should challenge for a play-off spot.
