The first game of the 2018 SSE Airtricity League is always something to look forward to and the President's Cup never fails to deliver on excitement.

The 2018 version will pit Premier Division champions Cork City against runners-up Dundalk in Oriel Park in a third successive meeting between the two clubs.

President Michael D Higgins praised both clubs for their excellent displays on the pitch in 2017 and many expect them to be amongst the teams to beat again in the new campaign.

Certainly, Dundalk manager Stephen Kenny knows how important it is to make a good start to the season and that starts with the President's Cup.

“It’s all about getting ourselves ready for the first game against Bray but this is a good game to be involved in,” said Kenny.

“It’s another match for us and it’s going to be very competitive against Cork City and we are looking forward to it.”

Cork City boss John Caulfield shares a similar mindset to his counterpart and is eagerly awaiting for the first opportunity to challenge for silverware in 2018.

“We are looking forward to the game. Games between the two teams are always very competitive and that makes it ideal to have right before the start of the season,” said Caulfield.

“Dundalk will have some new faces in their squad, as do we, so it will be an interesting game.”
