A brace for Vinny Faherty saw Galway United claim the three points at Eamonn Deacy Park as Longford Town fell to a 2-1 defeat in the SSE Airtricity League First Division on Friday night.

After going behind in the first half, after a sloppy mix up between Maurice Nugent and Kevin Horgan, the home side battled back to come back and win the game.

Faherty, who is set to be a guest on Sunday's Greatest League in the World podcast, nodded the ball in twice in the second half, the first goal was assisted by Marc Ludden and then, late in the second half, Conor Melody found the striker’s head again for his second.

“Honestly I just wanted to put it back to where it came from, back to that post. The ball is exactly what you want as a striker. Perfect, and on my head, all credit goes to Ludden,” Faherty said, speaking to reporters after the game.

“If you don’t get that ball people criticise you because you haven’t scored, but when you do get it, you have to give credit to the man who puts it in so all credit to Marc Ludden.

“The same thing with the second, I tried to go back across the goal, I actually didn’t put it as close to the post as I wanted. Luckily it went down, I wanted to head it down towards the ground and it just got under the goalkeeper.

“Maybe you can make the case that he might have saved it but I’m not complaining.”

Having lost to Cabinteely last week, Longford Town had the opportunity to go top of the SSE Airtricity First Division again on Friday night.

The Tribesmen certainly would not have been favourites for this one and many a spectator would be forgiven for thinking they would have been happy with a point but that notion would have been, understandably, slightly off the mark.

“It sounds so cliché but I prefer to come into that dressing room having won than coming in having drawn. It’s unbelievable, and it’s been coming to be honest.

“We really have turned a corner, it’s not going to be all uphill from here, we’re going to have bad results or bad performances, that’s normal, we’ve got a lot of young players.

“They’re great lads, they’ve worked their socks off and they have bundles of talents. Attitude won’t hold them back, I don’t know what will, it might just be luck or something else but they’re going to get the opportunities here.”

The experienced striker was pleased with the win but he is acutely aware of the challenges that face them each week. Starting with Bray Wanderers on Monday evening.

“We suffered towards the start of the season, we got unlucky and probably our own downfall too, being naïve and being inexperienced, but it wasn’t through a lack of effort and want so when you do get those results, where you get what you deserve, it’s extra sweet.

“It was brilliant and we’ll enjoy tonight but we need to refocus. There’s no point patting ourselves on the back and going up to Bray and getting beaten and coming back down the motorway disappointed again.

“We need to go and back that up now. That’s what senior football is about.”
