In a recording breaking campaign, Cabinteely FC claimed the final First Division play-off spot after defeating Athlone Town 3-1 last Friday at Stradbrook.

But the club’s Director of Football Pat Devlin insisted that the job remains unfinished after registering their best-ever finish of at least fourth place.

“It’s a been a long, hard season. The football side of the club has been fantastic. What we achieved with the budget we have; with the young players in the squad, and everything else, it’s been magnificent.”

He issued: "thanks to everybody involved in the club from the Board (of Directors) to the supporters and all our volunteers.”

Devlin went on to stress, “It’s job that’s unfinished. We have so much more to do. It’s a great achievement for all the staff and the players. And everyone connected with the club. It’s been hard work, extremely hard work. But we got there.”

With Longford Town losing to 2-1 Bray Wanderers on Saturday, third place is still there for the taking for Cabo as they look set to face the Midlanders in the 3rd/4th play-off over two-legs.

That’s unless there is a ten-goal swing when Longford travel to Cobh next Saturday while Bray host Drogheda.

Cabo make the trip to Wexford just a single point behind the 'Town.

“To get into the top-four is some achievement. We’ve virtually been in the top-four all season. We’ve only been beaten five times, the same as Shelbourne who’ve gone on to win the league,” pointed out Devlin.

“Overall, it’s fantastic to be in the top-four. Looking at it, we have done very well. Let’s see what we can now. There’s a lot still to play for. We have an important game away to Wexford.”

He continued: “We then have a two-legged campaign against Longford or Drogheda. We’ll see where that takes us. The play-offs are going to be different. It’s all about out preparations. Everyone’s focus will be on the first play-off game.”
