Cork City manager Neale Fenn admitted he was pleased with his side’s effort during their 4-2 defeat to Sligo Rovers in his first game in charge at Turner’s Cross on Friday night.
A brace apiece from Romeo Parkes and Ronan Coughlan earned Sligo the three points at the expense of Fenn’s men, who responded in vain through Dan Casey and Shane Griffin.
A crowd of 2,469 attended the former City striker’s first game at the helm and he is hoping they can reward that support with a win in their next home fixture against Waterford on Monday.
“All I could ask for coming in is that the lads give me everything and I thought they did,” said Fenn shortly after full time.
“There was no problem there but it is difficult to attack when you have always got the threat that they are going to score at the other end.
“We have only had a few days to work with them on my ideas but I saw enough tonight that there is enough to build on.
“I think defensively we weren’t at it. We let them get crosses into the box and they have scored four goals so your defence is always going to be at fault when you’ve conceded four goals.
“Were we too wide open? Were we too gung ho? Maybe but I didn’t feel that we were. I felt the way we set up, when you’re attacking sometimes you lose the ball in transition and they are a counter-attacking team that you can all just fly forward, some people have to stay back.
“It was two defenders that scored and was there any chances for the strikers? Probably not any real clear cut that they missed sitters. I thought they created their own chances and I thought that they did ok.”
“It was a fantastic crowd, it was a good reception as well obviously my first game coming in but especially as well going off the pitch it was a good reception from the Shed.
“It felt like an exciting game, I don’t think anyone could say that they were bored.
“We lost the game and probably rightly so on balance but I felt it was an exciting game especially at 3-2 I could feel the crowd getting a bit excited and I could feel them willing us to win which is good and hopefully on Monday we can put that right and get a good result.”
