Drogheda United manager Tim Clancy insists that the result was all that mattered after his side defeated rock bottom Athlone Town 2-1 at United Park.

Early goals from Luke Gallagher and Colm Deasy had the Drogs in cruise control but Baba Issaka's header midway through the second-half meant a nervous finish for the Trim native.

"We're certainly relieved to get all three points but it would've been a travesty if we didn't," Clancy explained post-match. "The Athlone keeper was outstanding and made a number of good saves and it seemed like we just couldn't kill the game off.

"I think we were a yard off the pace second-half, whether that was complacency I'm not sure, but the result is all that really matters."

Drogheda's dominance early on saw them cut through Athlone at will with Clancy quick to highlight the impact the weather conditions had on the game.

"That's the first game we've played here in months that there's been some rain and the difference was massive. Our passing was much more slick and Athlone struggled to live with us.

"We probably make things edgier for us than we had to but it's another win on the board and hopefully that start of a run."

While UCD were victorious at home to Galway United, a stalemate at Finn Park between Finn Harps and Shelbourne went in Drogheda's favour with the Drogs boss keen to see his side secure their play-off spot.

"Our aim since day one has been the play-offs. It would've been nice had Galway taken some points off UCD but Harps and Shels drawing works for us with them both losing some ground.

"We have six games left in the league and if we win them all, who knows where that'll leave us in the table.

"Our sole focus now is Wexford away next Friday and the opportunity to make it three wins on the bounce."
