"We could have been two or three down after ten or fifteen minutes."
Rovers opened very impressively, took the lead, and were only pegged back to parity by Patrick's superb 37th minute. Benson gave the Hoops due credit for playing their part in a fine match. "It was a great response in the second half.
"It was a great win for us in the end, comfortable, but we were made work for it."
Benson felt he owed his colleagues his two goals as well as the goalline clearance he effected when the score was 2-4.
"The first goal (Daniel Carr's 4th minute opener for Rovers) was my fault and it was a bit of a ropey start."
The former Athlone and UCD star supported his manager's assertion that Kenny's charges are a well motivated group projecting a very positive atmosphere.
"We were a bit disjointed in the first couple of minutes. We recovered well. It's a great squad. We have good camaraderie in the squad. When anyone scores, everyone's over to celebrate, everyone's happy."
Immediately, Benson's focus was switching to Dundalk's next two assignments, home to Limerick and away to Derry City. "We'll have to push on and get two more wins before the break."
And there's no doubt the Lilywhites have the league pennant on their minds. "Last year being so far behind Cork we never gave ourselves a chance. It's a long way out yet but the title is in our hands. If we keep winning to the end, the trophy is in our hands again, which is what we want."
