Finn Harps won successive games for the first time this season to move off the bottom of the table, albeit only on goal difference after a dramatic 3-2 win over Waterford FC at Finn Park.

Aaron Drinan put Harps to the test, opening the scoring after just four minutes before Mikey Place levelled with a free kick on 24 minutes.

Place put Harps in the lead from the spot in the 37th minute. Late drama commenced entering the final ten minutes of the match, as in the 89th minute Damien Delaney drew Waterford level before Sean Boyd fired Harps to victory a minute later.

Ollie Horgan admitted that after the opening 15 minutes of the match, things didn’t look good for his side.

“Waterford came out and they set the tempo, they’re a serious team, they thumped us 4-0 down at the RSC and we beat a proper side tonight, however we did run our luck a little bit, it was backs to the wall stuff in the second half.

“It was reminiscent of seasons gone by where we stood and be counted, it was disappointing to lose a goal for 2-2 from a set piece, it looked like they might go on and win it in injury time but thankfully, Sean Boyd, to his credit, he had missed a couple of chances but he stuck at it.”

Harps have now picked up eight points from their last four games and while they still remain at the wrong end of the table, the points tally makes for better viewing for Harps fans, but Horgan pointed out while the last results have been positive, it doesn’t erase the other results.

“They were four great results but what about the ten that went before it?” he asked.

“Sometimes when you’re on a run, decisions go your way, when you’re not on a run and nothing is going your way, that’s sport, that’s the reality of it.

“We have played better than tonight, during our ten game losing run and got nothing out of it,” he added.

Horgan handed starts to a number of young players, some of which have played before, with Liam Walsh being handed his debut and the Manager noted that patience is needed with young players.

“We need everybody here to be patient with them, they’re young, they’re good lads and they need everybody backing them,” he said.

“The younger lads, they are very much together but we need to use them sparingly and I think some people expect too much too soon from that age group,” he added.
