John Cotter is delighted to be in the hat for Monday’s Extra.ie FAI Cup second round draw as Cork City’s bid for a fifth final in a row remains alive.

The Leesiders needed a last minute second period extra time equalising goal by Ronan Hurley before seeing off First Division Cabinteely FC on Friday at Stradbrook 5-4 on penalties.

Third from bottom in the SSE Aitricity League Premier Division, City’s Interim Head Coach hopes the victory will help build momentum for the rest of the season.

“Hopefully, the boys have been brilliant for me. I wouldn’t knock any of them. Confidence has been down and it’s tough. Another late goal last week, but we’re on the other side of that tonight. We were due a bit of luck, look Ronan Hurley still showed a lot of quality with the finish and Dan Casey showed great composure to lay it off.”

He continued: “This is hopefully the start of our season now, we need to kick on. We’ve been doing well in a couple of games and let things slip so hopefully build a bit of momentum now.”

The win was the Rebels first domestic success since beating UCD at the Belfield Bowl last May.

And Cotter is looking for another Cup run having reached the last four deciders since 2015, winning it twice in their four years.

“It was huge to win, huge to get through, we didn’t play well after the first 30 minutes. I know the game was won on penalties but we haven’t won many games when we haven’t played well.”

He added “Look hopefully a bit of character and guts, the boys will take confidence from that. It was huge to get through, the supporters deserve a cup run, we’d love a cup run, everyone loves a cup run.”
