Liam Buckley’s Sligo Rovers registered their first win of the season, while also gaining bragging rights after their 2-1 away win against North-West rivals Finn Harps at Finn Park.
Romeo Parkes scored the opener shy of 30 minutes as Sligo went into the break with the lead, Kris Twardek doubled their advantage after the restart and held on for the points after Daniel O’Reilly reduced the deficit after the hour mark.
After falling just short in their previous outings, Buckley noted that he is delighted to get that first victory of the season.
“It was a hard fought three points, there was not a lot in the game in fairness but I’m delighted with the result.”
Romeo Parkes got the opener on the 28th minute after rounding Peter Burke and Buckley noted it was key but they stepped off the gas to allow Harps a route back into the game.
“We did mention that before the game started(the opening goal), it was important to get a head start.
“At 2-0, we have given a stupid goal away to let Harps back in it, which kept them going right through till the end,” he said.
Captain Kyle Callan-McFadden hobbled off injured midway through the first half, adding to the injury to Ed McGinty before kick-off, but Buckley noted that he has plenty of quality players at his disposal.
“Yeah, we’ve got a few out, but we’ve got a lot of good players in our group, the improvement in Sligo is going to be through the collective, of how we all play together,” he said.
Liam Buckley has played against Finn Harps before and has managed against them but this was his first taste of a North-West Derby.
“It was strange travelling from Sligo to Finn Harps.
“It’s a local derby, there is a lot of pride from the crowds point of view, we had a lot of supporters here this evening,” he said.
“I’m delighted for them because we had two home games where we got unstuck in both of them, Pat’s and Cork, unlucky in both, that said it’s great to get a result, a win and we are up and running now,” he concluded.
