Jack Keaney is focusing on team goals over personal achievements despite hitting what will be a contender for goal of the season.

The Sligo Rovers youngster struck a sensational 30 yard free-kick against Shamrock Rovers on Saturday. A goal that proved to be the winner for the Bit O’Red.

But despite attracting almost 1,000,000 views on social media, Keaney was quick to suggest the three points, rather than his stunner was more important.

“I’m just as happy to get the three points as I am with the goal”, he said.

“Regan (Donelon) usually hits them from the right whereas I come in from the left. I said to him I’d hit this one and it’s gone in.”

Keaney’s goal wasn’t the only highlight of the evening. Daryl Fordyce’s opener from distance was just as pleasing on the eye, as was Aaron Greene’s acrobatic equaliser.

“Daryl can hit them with his left and right so we know he’s capable of that”, Jack continues.

“We were sloppy in giving away the goal but fortunately we did enough to get the win.”

The win was Rovers’ second on the trot following victory at the UCD Bowl five days previous, leaving Sligo with eight points from their last five games.

There have been impressive wins over the Hoops and Dundalk, but they’ve also suffered defeat to St Pat’s and were fortunate to take a point off Finn Harps.

Keaney says those more rounded performances are an indication of what this Sligo Rovers team can really do.

“Those performances are always there”, he says.

“We were disappointed with how we played against Harps and were probably lucky to get the point. But I think when you play the bigger teams it makes you want to work harder.

“We’ve beaten Dundalk, then UCD and now Shams who are probably the best team in the league. That’s what we have to aspire to every week.

“We have to keep setting those high standards where we put in performances every week and not once every two weeks. That’s what we’re trying to do!”

Waterford is next on the list for Rovers and Keaney who just wants to see his side continue to post points on the league table.

“We’ve won on Monday and we just wanted to build on that by winning tonight. We go into next week with our confidence up.”
