Shelbourne climbed to the top of the First Division table courtesy of a 1-0 win over Cobh Ramblers on Friday night.

A first half header from Ryan Brennan was enough to secure the points but Shels had to be strong defensively to keep an eager Cobh side at bay. After the win, The Reds' Conan Byrne was full of praise for his opponents and pleased that Shels could grind out the win.

"Cobh matched us in pretty much every area of the pitch but we were delighted to get the three points," he said. "It's happened over the last couple of weeks, we've grafted out results. It's a great sign that we're able to do that."

With Shels now top of the table, Byrne has no intention of letting the lead slip, adding: "It'd be great if we could stay there because we didn't start the season too well. We've managed to get three wins in a row and one defeat in six and if we keep that going it'll give us good confidence."

Byrne was part of the last Shels side to get promoted in 2011 and it's a feat he feels they can achieve once more.

"It was good at the end of that season so hopefully this one will be similar. But there's a long way to go and a lot of hard work that needs to be done. We're not playing to our potential yet we're coming away with victories. So it's a good sign."

Next up for Shelbourne, a home game against Longford Town next Friday night.
