Drogheda United manager Tim Clancy believes his side paid the price for poor finishing as they lost 1-0 to Longford Town at United Park.
Aaron Dobbs struck the winner for the league leaders on the stroke of half-time and despite creating a number of openings, Drogheda suffered their fourth defeat of the season much to Clancy’s frustration.
“We lost tonight because we didn’t take any of our chances,” the trim native explained post-match. “I felt we had as many goal scoring opportunities as Longford, the only difference was they were more clinical.
“I think the night was summed up for us when Sean Brennan had a great free-kick saved by Lee Steacy and we had three players following it up and we still couldn’t force the ball in.”
The Drogheda boss was particularly frustrated with the timing and manner of Longford’s goal, a blow from which his side were unable to recover from.
“We had a corner-kick that went out of play and everyone just seemed to switch off. You can’t do that any stage of the game but particularly not in first-half stoppage time.
“Obviously it was the key moment of the game and it gave Longford something to hold onto after the break. We have to stop giving ourselves a mountain to climb.”
Despite an inconsistent start to the campaign, victory at home to Limerick next week would see Drogheda climb into the play-off places with Clancy eager to see his side put a disappointing defeat behind them.
“There’s very little between the sides in the league. Longford look to be the best equipped team and their defensive record is excellent but we pushed them all the way tonight.
“Limerick will be a tough challenge as well but if we show a little bit more ruthlessness in both penalty areas, we'll have a great chance of coming away with an important result."
