Longford Town jumped back up into second in the league with a convincing 1-0 win over Cobh Ramblers at the City Calling Stadium on Saturday night.

Sam Verdon's strike just past the half hour mark secured another three vital points for the midlands side as they overtook Drogheda United in the table and look towards Shelbourne who are just four points ahead.

Interim Cobh Manager Stuart Ashton will be disappointed not to have gotten at least a draw out of the game, with Jaze Kabia and Greg Henry both testing Longford keeper Lee Steacy on a number of occasions in the first half.

However, it was the home side that opened the scoring in the 31st minute when a brilliant one-two between Sam Verdon and Aaron Dobbs sent the towering forward through on goal and he expertly dispatched the ball past Paul Hunt in the Cobh goal.

Speaking after the game, Verdon revealed that the team were disappointed going into the break following defeat to Bray.

“It's a difficult one to come back to after the break with that disappointing loss, and tonight, would have been nice to get a couple more.

"We got the goal at the right time and we controlled the game. I think we done what we wanted and we got three points and it's on to Friday now.”

Neale Fenn's side should have indeed had at least two or three more with Dean Byrne, Mick McDonnell having opportunities and Verdon again going close when he tried lobbing Hunt from the halfway line in the second half.

Looking ahead to a tough game on Friday night away to Limerick at Market's Field, Verdon was keen to emphasise how competitive the league is this year for every team wherever they play.

“It's a really competitive division. We certainly want to stay up there with Shels going into the last round of games.

"I think if we produce the same kind of form we had at the start of the season then there's a good chance of us winning the league and that's what we want to do.”
