Shelbourne midfielder Adam Evans believes the win over Athlone Town can gives Shels the platform to build their First Division campaign on.

The Dublin club claimed their first win of the campaign as goals from James English, Derek Prendergast and a brace from Evans sealed victory against ten-men Athlone.

Walter Invernizzi did put the home side ahead in the 15th minute but Niall Scullion was sent off on the stroke of half-time as Shels dominated the rest of the occasion.

Evans was delighted to see the side get off the mark in the campaign and was also happy to add to his goal tally.

Evans said: "It's about time, the last performances in the last two games have been really good and we fully deserved the win today.

"Happy with my two goals, got off the mark against Cobh last week which was a bit of a lucky goal but I'm definitely taking those two goals tonight.

"The sending off changed the direction of the game. We were on top for the first 20 minutes or so but they came back into the game.

"With the sending off, it certainly helped us in the second half. It was a tough game, the pitch made it difficult and it looked like it was going to be a difficult evening for us."

The win sees Shelbourne climb to fifth in the First Division and Evans hopes the win can push the side on the path to promotion.

He added: "We want to get promotion, that's the only aim you can have at this level and it is such an even league at the moment.

"We've got four tough games out of the way but we can certainly build on tonight's result and look to push on into the season now."
