It was a familiar story of missed chances proving costly for Limerick FC after they exited the EA SPORTS Cup at the last 16 stage following a 1-0 defeat to Cobh Ramblers at the Markets Field.

Blues boss Tommy Barrett cut a frustrated figure post-game after his charges failed to put their opportunities away and were punished by Ben O’Riordan’s late winner that booked Cobh’s spot in the quarter finals.

“We didn’t do enough on the night and again it’s down to missed chances,” said Barrett after the game.

“You take the lead and you might get a second one. Without scoring, you give them hope of getting into the game in the second half. They get a set piece late on and put it away. Fair play to them.”

The biggest opportunity Limerick had in the game fell to former Cork and Finn Harps striker Danny Morrissey, who failed to turn the ball into an empty net from less than six yards out.

Despite dominating territory and possession throughout, that was the closest Limerick came to scoring and the lack of creativity is a topic that continues to concern Barrett.

On Morrissey’s missed chance Barrett said: “He just hit it wrong probably but you have got to score those. We are not creating enough chances really and it’s a problem at the moment.

After exiting the EA SPORTS Cup, Limerick’s attentions turn to an already crucial clash with fellow SSE Airtricity League Premier Division strugglers Sligo Rovers on Saturday.

Despite the defeat to Cobh, Barrett is confident that Limerick can get a positive result when Sligo visit the Markets Field.

“We got a good result against Bohs (in their last league game) and we will have a different team again on Saturday. We will be as confident as we can be and will have our best available side on the pitch.

“Sligo are a good side. They are packed with very good players and are probably in a false position but like us tonight, having better players on the pitch doesn’t mean you are going to win the game.

“They are a threat to us with the players they have but we have to be positive and try and get a result,” concluded the Limerick boss.
