Limerick FC interim manager was honest in his appraisal of the Super Blues’ 3-0 defeat to Cork City in the EA Sports Cup Round Two fixture at the Markets Field.

Boland admitted that Cork were full vale for the victory, saying: “Cork were miles ahead of us out there tonight.

“We were off the pace – right from the start to be fair. They looked far the better side throughout the game and fully deserved the win. They were probably a little more value for the three goals as well.

“From our point of view, I suppose it was a tough ask on the lads, in relation to there was a whole new 11.

“Not many of them had played many games this season – a few of them played their first game of the season. So, to throw them all together like that, it was always going to be difficult for them.

“Especially with the three games in six days I think it would have been a tough ask for the starting 11 from the win against Drogheda to play today and on Friday.”

One bright spark for Limerick during the game was the performance of U-19 centre half Barry Cotter and Boland was quick to praise the youngster.

“I think Barry did well. He probably looked a bit nervous to start off with, which we obviously expected.

“He was up against good players and he held his own. Barry has been excellent all season for the U-19’s and deserved an opportunity in a game like this and he came out of it with credit.”

Boland also made no secret of the fact that Limerick’s home game against Galway United in the SSE Airtricity League Premier Division on Friday was his sole focus going into the game against Cork.

A win over Galway will consolidate Limerick’s fourth place position in the table and should have a full squad to pick from for the game.

“There is a couple of knocks here and there, but nothing too serious. Everyone should be ok for the game on Friday.

“We will assess them over the next couple of games, but yeah that was the main aim after the result against Drogheda, we were focusing on the game against Galway.

“We are in a good position in the league and the lads played really well on Saturday. We took a chance today by putting 10 new bodies out there and it didn’t work,” concluded Boland.
