Gary McCabe may be the ace in Harry Kenny’s sleeve but he was thrilled to be dealt a clean sheet at the eighth time of asking.

His side did it the hard way against Galway – they lost right-back Hugh Douglas to injury in the first half, Conor Kenna was dismissed early in the second half and they had third-choice left-back Alan Kehoe on the field to boot.

But despite all this, McCabe’s seventh league goal of the campaign on 35 minutes propelled Bray Wanderers to third.

“It’s getting back to what we were about last year. There were a couple of clean sheets thrown into those three games (Derry, Drogheda and Galway) as well which is really pleasing. We dug in tonight and I thought overall that we deserved to win the game. They didn’t really create anything clear cut and even when we were down to the 10 men. We readjusted well after the red card, Derek came in and did a good job and Bucko slotted in reasonably well at full-back.”

McCabe’s strike leaves him behind only Sean Maguire in the goalscoring charts and he has been a pleasant surprise for his boss.

“I didn’t expect this. At Rovers, he was playing a lot in the middle of the pitch but he’s a 10 – he creates and he scores goals and good at deadball situations and he’s thriving here with us at the moment. We’ve a good attacking force with Aaron and Dylan either side of him so he’s always going to create and score goals.”

Galway United as a team have scored three goals less than McCabe. They were toothless, despite trying a 3-4-3 formation and remain rooted to the foot of the table as a consequence.
