Drogheda United manager Tim Clancy was delighted to see his side return to winning ways after they defeated Cobh Ramblers 2-1 at United Park.

The Drogs had suffered successive defeats to UCD and Longford Town before the mid-season break but Luke Gallagher’s second-half winner could prove to be a key moment in their season according to the Trim native.

“It was great to get that winning feeling back,” Clancy explained post-match. “I think we probably should’ve beaten Shelbourne and Longford during that run while we were poor away at UCD but they were three tough away games on the bounce.

“Our home form has been excellent this season and to win without the likes of Jake Hyland, Sean Brennan and Conor Kane is fantastic for us. I think it might prove to be a big three points at the end of the season"

Results elsewhere means that Drogheda have moved to within four points of leaders UCD though Clancy is still weary of the tight gap between themselves and fifth placed Finn Harps.

“It’s even tighter at the top after tonight’s results. It probably brings UCD back into focus for everyone else but when the gap is only three points between second place and finishing outside the play-offs, you can’t get carried away.

“I still wouldn’t say that I’m paying too much attention to the league table. There is a lot of football left to be played but if we can get another result next week against Finn Harps, hopefully it’ll be the start of a good run."

With the summer transfer window opening next week, Clancy confirmed that he is on the lookout for players as he hopes to strengthen his squad heading into the final weeks of the campaign.

“We’re definitely on the lookout for some new additions. I think it showed tonight that the squad is low on numbers, we had four under-19s on the bench and two defenders.

“With a bit of luck, we’ll get a couple of players in that’ll give us the push we need for the run-in."
