John Cotter has confirmed that Cork City have asked him to apply for the role of permanent first team manager. The club released a statement on Wednesday afternoon inviting expressions of interest in the full-time managerial position vacated by John Caulfield at the beginning of May. Cotter has since taken charge of the team as interim head coach with Frank Kelleher recently coming in as interim first-team manager with the club needing someone on the managerial staff that possesses a pro license to take charge in European Competition. Speaking to reporters ahead of Sunday afternoon’s game with Shamrock Rovers at Turner’s Cross, Cotter admitted he has been approached to apply for the role of manager on a permanent basis and he insisted it would be a “proud moment” if his application was successful. “The club have asked me to apply for it, I was told that the other day and that will be in the pipeline,” he confirmed. “That’s all for now really, to be honest, that was dealt with there. I have a good relationship with the club, good communication and honest and we have had positive talks on that. “That’s where that is now, I can’t give you any more information on that because I don’t know any more information on that so all our focus is on Sunday and knowing that we need to go and win games. That’s the main thing for this club, to get back up the table and start winning games. “I knew this could pop up at some stage, to be honest, and it hasn’t disrupted my week one bit. I have been fully focussed with the players and I back the players and the players would back me and we are focussed on Sunday. “All we can keep doing is to keep doing our job and that is what we have done this week. Yesterday, today, back in Saturday for training for Sunday and that’s all I am concentrating on to try and go out and get the three points on Sunday. “I’m very proud to be doing what I’m doing at the moment and for the last few months. I’ve said before I would always have come to Turners Cross as a kid with my dad to watch games out here in Bishopstown. “I remember walking from Ballincollig to watch the Slavia Prague here, I walked out with a friend of mine. No doubt as a local man that I am and a Cork man that I am it would be a proud moment for me but it’s a proud moment for me doing what I am doing now anyway. “What comes down the line, comes down the line. I wouldn’t be thinking about that now I’m focussed on Sunday and doing the job properly for that.”
