Waterford FC midfielder Garry Comerford insists that his side are taking nothing for granted despite opening a five-point lead at the top of the SSE Airtricity League First Division.

Comerford assisted Mark O’Sullivan’s fourth-minute opener before getting on the scoresheet himself on Friday evening as the Blues beat Cabinteely 3-0 at the RSC.

“It’s another step in the right direction for us and it’s good to get another win under our belts at home. We were very quick out of the blocks and the early goals put us in the driving seat.

“I thought that we played some very good football during the course of the game and although it did get a bit scrappy, we always looked comfortable. We were solid at the back again and to keep another clean sheet is a big bonus.

“We’ve shown in the last couple of games that we’ve played that we are really starting to get things together and I think people saw that especially early in the game. I was delighted to play a role in the first goal with the cross but it’s fantastic to get my first goal for the club as well.”

The win sees a five-point gap open to Cobh Ramblers in second place, and a seven-point gap to third-placed UCD who the Blues face this coming Friday.

“Things are going really well for us now and it’s great to be top of the table. We came off the field to the news that UCD lost, which is a bonus but we must worry about ourselves. We have a big game against them next week away from home and we have to be focussed on that game.

“Nothing is going to be easy up there. We’ll get back training early in the week and prepare for the next challenge. It’s great to be top of the table but we’re taken nothing for granted. We have to continue to work as a team and continue to push forward to achieve our aim which is promotion.”
