Cork City have been crowned SSE Airtricity League Premier Division champions for the first time in 12 years as they secured the single point they needed by drawing with Derry City 0-0 at Turners Cross on Tuesday evening.

In truth, this was a rather tame affair as the home side continued their struggles in front of goal since the departure of the clinical striker Sean Maguire.

Attacking midfielder Garry Buckley twice tried his luck from distance in the first half but on both occasions, he was easily foiled by Derry keeper Gerard Doherty. Derry went close when Rory Patterson had a clever lob saved before Harry Monaghan missed a glorious opportunity when he drove his free header over from a few yards.

The second half was a precision as neither side took any risks in an attacking sense and the scoreless draw was enough for Cork City to claim the league title for the first time since 2005 and finally end Dundalk’s three year hold on the silverware.
