5th June 1994: The Republic of Ireland lost 3-1 to the Czech Republic in the farewell friendly at Lansdowne Road ahead of the 1994 World Cup Finals in the USA. Ireland beat Italy thirteen days later in New Jersey. Townsend, captain, scored in the 43rd minute before Pavel Kuka (pen 25, 54) and Jan Suchoparek (81) scored for the Czechs. It was Tony Cascarino‘s 50th cap and the attendance was 43,465. The Czech’s included Karel Poborsky in their line up with Pavel Nedved coming on as a substitute in the 88th minute to win the first of his 91 caps for his country.

5th June 2002: The Republic of Ireland drew 1-1 with Germany in the Kashima Soccer Stadium in Ibaraki, Japan in the second of our three World Cup group matches. Miroslav Klose scored in the 19th minute but Robbie Keane equalised in the 90th minute. The attendance was 35,900.  Captain Steve Staunton won his 100th cap – the first Republic of Ireland player to achieve this milestone.

5th June 2004: The Republic of Ireland beat the Netherlands by 1-0 in an international friendly match played at the Amsterdam Arena. The Dutch were warming up for Euro 2004. Robbie Keane scored the winner in the 45th minute. Michael Doyle of Coventry City won his only cap when he replaced Andy Reid in the 88th minute. Dick Advocaat was the Dutch manager and the attendance was 42,000.
