1st April 1959: Barry Murphy was born in Dublin on this day. 

The former Bohemians, St. Patrick's Athletic, Shamrock Rovers, Kilkenny City and Athlone Town defender ranks 15th on the all-time league appearance list. 

He won a senior cup for the Republic of Ireland as well. It was in Jack Charlton's second match in charge, a 1-1 draw against Uruguay at Lansdowne Road on April 23, 1986. 

He had a 20-year career in the league from 1977 to 1997 and made a total of 477 appearances in the league. 

A tough-tackling defender, Murphy was respected around the league and it is his 61th birthday today.
