10th April 1938: St. James’ Gate, inaugural winners in 1922, won the FAI Cup for the second and final time when they defeated Dundalk by 2-1in the Final at Dalymount Park. Their goals were scored by Dickie Comerford (16) and Peadar Gaskins (pen. 49) with Alf Rigby (47) scoring for Dundalk.

10th April 1949: Dundalk won the FAI Cup for the second time in their history by defeating Shelbourne by 3-0 in the Final at Dalymount Park. The goal scorers were Jackie Walsh (20, 68) and Ronnie Henderson (41).

10th April 1977: Sligo Rovers ended a forty year wait to win the League of Ireland championship for the second time when they defeated Shamrock Rovers by 3-1 at The Showgrounds. Their goals came from Gary Hulmes (6), Chris Rutherford (69) and Paul McGee (78). The late Paul Magee, son of the legendary late broadcaster, Jimmy equalise for the Hoops in the 57th minute.

10th April 1988: Al Finucane played his final League of Ireland match when he lined out for Newcastlewest in a 0-0 draw with U.C.D. at Ballygowan Park. His total of 634 League appearances with Limerick (376), Waterford (237) and Newcastlewest (21) is the record number of appearances made by any player in the League. He is one of only two players to have captained two difference clubs to win the FAI Cup – Limerick (1971) and Waterford (1980). He was capped 11 times by the Republic of Ireland between 1967 and 1971 and was captain on his last appearance against Austria in Linz in October 1971. He won the SWAI Personality of the Year Award for 1966/67 season and the PFAI Merit Award in 2018. He set a then record as the oldest player to play in European competition when he played for Waterford United against Bordeaux in 1986 at the age of 43 years and 267 days.

On This Day in Irish Football - April 10

10th April 1983: Paul Green was born on this day in Pontefract, West Yorkshire. He won 22 caps scoring one goal for the Republic of Ireland international between 2010 and 2014. He was a member of the squad for EURO 2012 in Poland and Ukraine making a substitute appearance against Spain in Gdansk. At club level he has played for Doncaster Rovers, Derby County, Leeds United, Ipswich Town, Rotherham United, Oldham Athletic and his current club Crewe Alexandra.
