12th April 1978: The Republic of Ireland lost by 3-0 to Poland in a friendly match in the Widzew Stadium in Lodz. The Poles, who were preparing for the 1978 World Cup Finals to be held in Argentina won with three second-half goals from Zbigniew Boniek (52), Kazimierz Deyna (60) and Wlodzimierz Mazur (82). Today, Boniek is President of the Polish FA and a member of the UEFA Executive Committee. Sadly, both Deyna (in 1989 at the age of 41) and Mazur (in 1988 at the age of 34) are no longer with us. Three players made their international debuts in this match: Eamonn Gregg of Bohemians and the Drogheda United duo of Jerome Clarke and Cathal Muckian who won their only cap.
